Python3 support

This pull request should make the plugin compatible with both Python 2 and 3. I've only tested on Python 2.7, although it should also still work with 2.6 I've done all python 3 development with 3.5.2

I have to say thanks for the comprehensive unit tests you've got, they were invaluable for ironing out issues along the way.

@andrewleech I don't really maintain this project any more. If you want to take it over I'd be glad to give you the pypi project and so on.
