More documentation on necessary DOM structure

Can you provide a bit more documentation on the DOM structure necessary to work? I look at the examples, but I can't quite figure out what the requirements are, and when I try to use this on my code, it doesn't work (it doesn't even show any activity in terms of adding classes or styles).

So I'm a bit stuck as to what I'm doing wrong.
