Formating author names: Surname, Firstname

The format using comma (“surname_1, firstname_1 and surname_2, firstname_2”) is more robust than “firstname_1 surname_1 and firstname_2 surname_2”. Would it be possible to always use it?

The issue is, the database this works on (crossref) doesn't differentiate what first and last name is... it's guesswork also here at best.
