We do have a way to exclude files from publishing. But sometimes you want to publish them but just not make them directly discoverable e.g. in your sidebar or you don't want to index them for full text search.

Agreed. though i'd say this is pretty low priority atm.

BTW making the sitewide LHS sidebar more configurable is something of growing interest to me and could be its own issue ... (at some point).
