Short Git Hashes

It would be nice if we could control the size of Git hashes. It's very rare to need the full thing. I think Git by default picks "7" as unique for most repositories. The Linux kernel supposedly with it's millions of changes only needs 11 chars to uniquely identify change sets but I have a hard time imaging that kind of scale.
