Consider rOpenSci and JOSS?
It might be good to submit this to peer review at rOpenSci and JOSS. They have a publishing partnership, and some universities look favorably on peer reviewed/published software for tenure packets.
According to their guidelines, they recommend getting reviewed before CRAN submission.
idk if this fits in any of the categories listed at rOpenSci's page, but it would fit with JOSS for sure.

It does not include general tools for literate programming (e.g., R markdown extensions not under the previous topics).
JOSS should work though.

I'd be curious if folks at rOpenSci would be interested in it, though, I agree it doesn't seem to fit there.
I don't see anything about pre/post-CRAN submission in JOSS's submission guidelines. Of the things I've reviewed for JOSS, two weren't on CRAN yet and one was, so I don't think it's an issue.

Yeah I'm definitely in favor of this as well, but I agree it would probably be more compelling if we had at least some basic lmer models covered. Maybe we can get some/most of the examples from the lmer documentation covered and then we submit?
Hi all, getting some/most of the examples fro the lmer documentation sounds like it would be a good start - I say, let's aim for that before JOSS submission.
On a different but related note, I'd be curious about gauging your (and editors and reviewers') interest in an article for a venue like Teaching Statistics. Thoughts?
That's interesting. I'm not familiar with that outlet at all. Is it peer-reviewed? Target audience looks to be K-12 teachers which is cool but not an audience I've really written for much (definitely not against it though). So I suppose I'm interested if you think they would be interested in something from us around the package and how to use it for teaching.
I'm not super familiar either - just checked, and it is peer-reviewed. I didn't realize it was K-12 focused. The Journal of Statistics Education seems to have a broader intended audience. Just something for future consideration - I appreciate your interest in it!
Revisiting this. Above we talked about waiting until we had at least basic lmer support. Is that still the plan? Or should we try to submit to JOSS after our first CRAN submission?
I think the above plan is still good. I do think supporting lmer (and possibly nlme) output would be really good to do, given that it's really common to include equations from these in manuscript (and if you're like me, it's kind of hard to write them).
I'd personally love to lead or co-lead (or support if you prefer!) a stats education-focused paper. JOSS seems like it would be a good home for this. rOpenSci doesn't seem to be, even though their aims and scope have been broadened a bit (making me less sure of that).
Hi both, revisiting this again. I think with v0.2 on CRAN now would be the time to submit to JOSS. We could wait until we implement the Bayesian stuff with brms but... this could also easily turn into a "we'll do after we do X" and then never end up doing it. So my vote would be that we submit to JOSS soon. Thoughts?
Also - @JaySumners, bringing you in on the convo too as I'd like you to be an author on the paper too, assuming that's something you're interested in.
No reason why an initial submission couldn't be done now and then another done later if significant improvements are made. I'm game to help out.
I wanted to let the group know I'll be MIA on new devlopment until mid-May. You'll probably see a flurry of activity from me around then (especially filling out the rest of the forecast package). I'm happy to work on small fixes between now and then if you tag me in them though.
