Population of Utrecht is incorrect

Open z3ntu opened this issue 3 years ago • 16 comments

The data for the city of Utrecht is incorrect https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL310

According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utrecht) the number is ~350,000, not 1.3 million.

The 1.3 million number is the district of Utrecht (see Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utrecht_(province) ), there the number is correct https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL31

Thank you for the report! The right Utrecht node that we should link to is https://datacommons.org/place/wikidataId/Q39297398, which has ~350K population.

We will fix it.

Any update on when this will be fixed? Google shows quite misleading data because of that image

Thanks for the reminder. We will prioritize this early next week, first to stop showing the wrong result, and then fixing it right.

Hi, the graph "Population in Utrecht" at https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL310 still shows >1M population.

z3ntu avatar Dec 04 '21 10:12 z3ntu

The wrong result should no longer show on Google search.

Still looks like my screenshot from October when you google "amsterdam population", but if you mean that no wrong graph is shown at "utrecht population" then yes because I don't get a graph with that search.

Any update on this?

Hi, this is still broken in https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL310

z3ntu avatar Jul 30 '22 11:07 z3ntu

Soon 2 years since opening, this is still a problem. Population of the city gets shown as > 1 million.

I really am questioning the data quality of both Google and datacommons if such a simple thing can't even be fixed in any reasonable amount of time. Presenting wrong data for years is maybe not the thing you'd want from a data source?

Apologies, this fell through the crack. We will try to resolve this issue in a few weeks.

@z3ntu actually, to confirm, where do you see this? This has been fixed in Google search since 2021.

Please note that https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL310 is not the city, but a NUTS region (per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUTS_statistical_regions_of_the_Netherlands):

We don't have data for Utrecht city yet, we can prioritize that.

Update: We should not call it "City" on https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL310. It should be called Province. We'll fix that too!

pradh avatar Jan 30 '24 16:01 pradh

And the NUTS Utrecht province does have 1.3M population per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utrecht_(province).

You can still clearly see a comparison of the population between Amsterdam (city), Rotterdam (city) and Utrecht (province and not the city), so this graph in Google is still very misleading.

image

Also https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL310 clearly states it's about the city and not the province whereas https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL31 has the correct numbers for the province.

But okay, according to https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/documents/345175/7451602/nuts-map-NL.pdf the NUTS 3 place called "Utrecht" (NL310) is not about the city but about the equally-sized region of the province of Utrecht (NL31). So yes, the population number for NUTS 3 called Utrecht is correct, but the city of Utrecht has a population of about ~350k (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q803)

As updated earlier, we are planning the below

  • Data Commons does not have data for Utrecht City. We will bring in the population data for Utrecht City and map it to the correct Utrecht City place node.
  • Correct the typeOf to remove City from https://datacommons.org/place/nuts/NL310 and map it to EurostatNUTS3.

We will keep you updated on the fix.
