Write tests that trigger #125 and #128

After a recent rewrite, the test_service.py file has been decommissioned and is incompatible with the current API; there is no plan to update it.

However, triggering issues #125 and #128 currently relies on test_service.py. Those issues are important and rather severe, and we should make sure they get fixed. To ensure they do, we should write new tests that trigger the corresponding issues.
