Emulating P2P network to test DaT protocol using Mininet Emulator

Trying to emulate Dat network in mininet.. Though Dat can be accessed from different hosts.. not able to mimic a network.. any inputs.? I have assigned the hosts the ip addresses and set up the entire network Would every DaT node need to be connected to real network, only then it can exchange the files ?
