On Encouraging Dask users to star the gh repo
@mrocklin issued a PR to dask.org that adds a GH star icon.
I think this is a good idea and wanted to raise the issue of encouraging Dask users to star the repo.
I know that GH stars are a bit of a silly metric bu I've also seen people time and time again use it as a proxy for popularity (a recent example is here).
I'm wondering what else we could do. Any thoughts?
One idea is to include an instruction to star the repo, if you use Dask, in this tutorial, and encourage those who teach Dask at conferences, etc... to mention this.
Another idea is an explicit call to star in the docs.
Another is to tweet it out occasionally.
All these have differing levels of potential obtrusiveness and I want to be sensitive to that also.
Interested in all your thoughts!
I think I remember bokeh having a star challenge where they were trying to hit a certain number by a certain date and that was pretty effective. Maybe we can do a back to school challenge in September where we try to get 1000 stars in a month or something.
I recently came across a fun tool which shows star history. Here is a plot for dask/distributed:

This might be of interest given the interest in stars
It's surprising how predictable/flat that curve is.

First time I've seen this on someone docs: a star counter
https://tods-doc.github.io/index.html
There is often something about seeing a (large) number that makes people want to be associated with it.
No idea how easy it is to add a star counter to the current star button on the website. That is of course if desired.

It's pretty easy to use shields.io for this:
for instance is at https://img.shields.io/github/stars/dask/dask?style=social
