sli on 1060 cards (no sli bridge connector)

if i understand it correctly this method would allow me to pair two standard consumer gtx 1060 and "hack sli" mode without the need of a sli cable? which the 1060s don't have connectors for anyways. (fu nvidia)...

do i need to use the 417.22 driver that is recommended by many in online forums, or will this work with most actual driver as well?

to clarify, i am only trying to make sli work for two 1060 in a 8x/8x pcie sli-compatbile motherboard but without the nvlink cable. i am not interested in the "mining cards" stuff...
