I got concerned that this is technically breaking the interface.

We probably need a more stupid approach.

Also I'm not sure that pubspec_parse is really the right thing to do - in most instances pub should really be the one to parse pubspecs.

Given all that, I'll close this for now. I don't really have the resources to pursue this now.
