get_course_list() gives curl error

When I run

set_canvas_domain("http://canvas.smcvt.edu")
get_course_list()

I get the following error:

Error: lexical error: invalid char in json text.
                                       <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//
                     (right here) ------^
