AFAIK there's no standard for opening the calendar to a specific date. We probably should double check how GNOME Calendar and Evolution handle it and see if there's some convention...

It sounds like the suggestion here is to have the browser part of the save version of the file chooser dialog collapsed by default and replaced by a simpler combobox...
