The pitch form does not display a message to the user telling them that they need to log in.

Yes but if they aren't logged in there's no "You aren't logged in" message.

I think that's obvious they aren't logged in if there's a login form that shows up at the bottom...

This is something I noticed as well. The "you aren't logged in" message could be helpful, although not necessary.
