Always show original source for a post

Open nottalulah opened this issue 2 years ago • 5 comments

There should be a way to see the original source for a post. Since you can edit it in the upload form or after submission before the first version stops merging, people can just upload from file/url then remove/alter the source and there is no way to see where it came from. I've seen this happen a few times already.

Admins can see it on the uploads themselves.

Also, this is probably not going to happen, since the original sources for some uploads are sensitive, such as paid links, which is one of the primary reasons why other people's uploads are not shown to those below the Admin level.

An alternative to this would be to differentiate between sensitive and non-sensitive links, and allow users below the Admin level to see uploads from sources which aren't sensitive. For this, I'm not sure which would be better/easier, maintaining a list of link formats which are sensitive, or maintaining a list of link formats which would not be sensitive.

Uploading paywalled content is already forbidden, so that's not really an issue.

Yeah, but if it probably still happens, in fact, I know it does, because I still encounter posts without an ID or MD5 all the time, which tells me that they are paywalled.

Having those URLs visible would help approvers ban paid rewards faster, too. In any case people uploading from paywalls don't use direct links from Patreon, they just reupload samples from rule34 or yandere

i sometimes upload directly from my own fileserver for convenience, and override the source in order to avoid exposing my IP address, so if the original source becomes a field, i think it should be restricted to approvers or higher (at a minimum)

This is the reason why it's not shown. Sources can contain private information and I don't know how to avoid that except by making a huge whitelist of known good sites that are allowed to show the source.
