Add wiki length limit to character wikis

Open nonamethanks opened this issue 4 years ago • 7 comments

It's gotten really bad with vtubers, to the point where everyone now has to dump an unreadable wall of text of useless trivia for their favorite streamer.

I tried to DM users about this but there's just too many random people doing this.

There's only 466 character wikis with body longer than 2000 characters, so that seems like a decent cutoff point.

Legitimate uses like for fairy_(kancolle) can be moved to something like list_of_kancolle_fairies.

I'd be against setting the limit so low. I'm obviously invested in over dozens of character wikis with character counts over 2000, which is most of the GuP character wikis. I challenge anyone to say that most of the information in them isn't useful. Even the character bio portions are useful, as that information exists nowhere translated on the internet AFAIK, and much of it explains several of the characters actions/motivations which can be useful for translations and whatnot.

The longest one is probably the Nishizumi Miho page, with is just under 3500 characters. I wouldn't probably need much more than that, but as a bit of leeway, just call it an even 4000. That would eliminate the top 40 offenders at least.

But if I had ultimate say myself, I would say that there shouldn't be any limit at all, or at least nothing that isn't comparable to what the forum post limit currently is set at (200,000). People can write long novels on the forum, but its the wikis that are a problem??? I see setting a length limit as stifling innovation and/or the enthusiasm of users to actually do the work to maintain them. I mean, why do we even have character wikis if we're going to do this. We might as well transition to using a curated list of common tags instead. To be perfectly honest, this whole thing sounds like a moderation issue and not a technical one.

Anyways, I've said my piece. Do or don't do what you will with this appeal. I won't be arguing any further.

You do make a fair point.

I think the main argument against long wikis thus far has been "you can just check the wikia page", and other online resources like those, but at the end of the day who's going to bother checking outside the website? It's so much simpler to just read the wiki and move on. Besides, user retention is good for the site, and if there's many random people doing it then that's probably because that's what people expect when they read the word wiki.

That being said, I can understand why this might seem annoying from the perspective of a curator/contributor, whose goals reading wikis differ from that of normal users.

Nobody is going to read a character's trivia on danbooru. There are far better sites for this.

Wikis should contain information related to tagging, not nonsense like the character's blood type or what their favorite animal is. If I am checking for relevant information for a character and see a gigantic wall of text that forces me to spend 10 minutes just to figure out what the tag for a specific ornament is, I just nuke the entire wiki.

You just said exactly same thing I was talking about.

For contributors it sucks, but for users it's not a bad thing because they don't really need to know the tag for a specific ornament: They just want to know more about the tag. I'd argue that "Wiki" should be renamed to "Common tags" for being a misnormer, in similar way how rating:safe behaves independently of the commonly understood definition.

Perhaps a better way to fix this for everyone would be to add a dedicated area where you can just dump tags into without having to bother about using double brackets with every single tag you want to reference. Korone's wiki becomes about 900 characters shorter if you were to remove all characters that aren't visible inside a tag's bracket notation, and it's one of the wikis that's mostly trying to show tags rather than trivia.

It's also cringe to read a long description trying to wiggle in as many tags as possible in its content. It almost feels as if someone who's ESL was trying to show off their knowledge. Just keep those within a list.

I am very much in favor of Typical Tags sections because anime clothing tends to be on the fucking stupid side. It isn't reasonable to expect people to remember every single tag on a character's outfit (especially vtubers who are all trying to outcompete each other on uniqueness). I know that evazion does not like them because they add to the wiki's length, but they are just too useful for tagging to get rid of with a hard length cap or similar measures. I can very quickly go through both the typical tags and my own frequent tags, and then only need to add maybe 3 more tags for the image to reach completion. It massively speeds up tagging and reduces how much my left hand hurts from typing out every single tag. When I first started, I learned about a whole bunch of new tags from those sections.

If its just the list aspect that's off putting, I don't see how making it along the lines of "She has [[HAIR LENGTH]] [[HAIR COLOR]] (sometimes [[OTHER HAIR COLOR]]) with [[HAIRSTYLE]] and wears a [[TOP STYLE]] [[TOP COLOR]] [[TOP NAME]] etc etc." is any better. It would make the wikis longer for a paragraph that could be better served by just listing the clothing.

I don't give a shit about the kancolle shipgirls entire naval history or random trivia about vtuber-who-does-too-much-chatting-and-not-enough-gameplay, but limiting the length on character wikis would harm the actually useful tagging sections of a wiki.

The real issue with vtubers is that we should just switch to having individual chartags for each costume, because right now searching for a specific costume really, REALLY sucks, even with wiki walls of texts (that nobody's going to read anyway).

nonamethanks avatar Jan 26 '22 23:01 nonamethanks

But then could we have Touhou chartags for specific costumes too? There's designs that I love to see on some girls, but they're really hard to find through tags alone.
