I followed all the steps in your README but the generated certificate does not work.

I also did not skip steps, but got it: CONSOLE LOG [Error: An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made.]

Same for me, maybe it does not work with current versions of Google Chrome?

+1 here.... does not work with Chrome 77.

On a MAC I forgot to mark the certificate as trusted after adding it to the Keychain. Did you guys do that? Also make sure you restart MAMP after changing any settings or adding new keys.

This got it working from Chrome and Safari. To get it working for Firefox I had to add the rootCA to Firefox directly (Settings > Privacy & Security > Certificates > View certificates > Import)
