[WIP] New interface
Still a work in progress, but I've been working on implementing the proposed rearchitecture from #17.
I have a local branch where I rewrote this project. It supports unified with xstream.
There is some more work required to land it. This particular PR should be closed, and I will push my new WIP branch up when I get back from holiday.
