Creating Leaves when there is a character in project name

Running tator/scripts/packages/tator-pyexamples/leaf.py to create leaves when the project's name contains characters results in a Bad Request Error, however, there is nothing stopping user from creating a name with characters. Can the characters be removed/stripped in the function that mutates the name into a leaf path?
