how I think: build custom js/board/emoji.js that transforms emoji keywords (eg. :ebinmaymay:) into corresponding images which are uploaded through board options

Might be better to work with twemoji.js and just be able to change out the icons for certain unicode codepoints

which though? not only is there a limited amount, but it kind of seems like a hassle and could cause confusion when substituting completely obscure, irrelevant unicode chars for an emoji

I think it's already possible to wordfilter :hankey: to 💩 for example. Then, custom emoji per board might be interesting. I don't really care since I block twemoji images which are too distracting for me and I prefer to read 💩 instead of 💩 (and yes, I do the same thing with boards' custom stylesheets, I'm an annoying guy). However, I don't really like unlimited custom emoticons. This is an imageboard, I don't want to see my reaction pics die for tiny maymays. There are already custom flags for this.

That's just my opinion though, I won't argue against this if it happens and after reading https://8chan.co/meta/res/37030.html it looks like some people want this (´･ω･`)

yeah, I was a bit uncertain about 8chan turning into your average twitch chatroom, but I think per-board emoji, specific to the purpose of that board, could come in handy. not even for spamming ebin maymays, but just to add a bit of flair to posts. of course, there's plenty of practical uses for emoji too
