[Feature Request] Make getEntries (and potentially all other I/O operations) asynchronous

Hello, could you please make getEntries (and potentially all other I/O operations) asynchronous?

I've seem a lot of requests like this in the issue page. Not sure if it requires little effort or not but many other users and I will be appreciated it if you have such plan.
