saves ignored if closed incorrectly?

I (accidentally) closed hammer by clicking X on the hammerpatch console window. This instantly closed it and Hammer. When I opened the map again, all my work from the last hammer session was just gone even though I'd done Ctrl+S many times. Fortunately the vmx had the changes saved, oddly.
