[enhancement] Printing progress statements while building the pdf

I used the build instructions from the README. It took the program 2 minutes to build the pdf. I didn't know that it would take that long, and since there was no feedback printed to the screen at all, I thought it was maybe broken. It would be nice if the program would print some messages to the terminal about what it was doing at that point.
