Improve file deletion

Open ghost opened this issue 10 years ago • 7 comments

Edit from Joseph: Previous title: [enhancement suggestion] Please add "delete" icon next to every file Title says all.

A little icon (triggering the delete function) next to all other available icons (tag/share/rename/dl) on each line for every file would be more user-friendly than selecting one file then scrolling upwards to the unique X delete top-right button. Of course this unique button must remain because useful for multiple selection. But more than ofen we have to delete one single file, hence my request.

We try various solutions, none of them completely satisfy us. Thank you for the input, it's definitely important to have more opinions on the matter to make decisions. @frankrousseau I ping you in case you missed this issue.

The problem is that there are too many icons close to the file. Having extra action before running a deletion seems a good option too.

Extra actions are good securities. The thing is that it is not very mentally straightforward to reach the option ;-)

Indeed, even if I have already used it many times, my mind still bugs in front of the page and I question myself : "How do I delete it yet ?"

But I agree on the fact that it would also be a bit cumbersome to have too many icons next to the file name.

I only see 3 solutions for now, any idea is more than welcome:

  • current behaviour. You select one (or more) items and then you can select the "remove selection" action.
  • old behaviour. There is a remove button next to every file
  • dropbox behaviour. All actions are contextual. You must select a file, then it shows all available actions at the top of the list. You can also select multiple files, and those actions change. The only action next to each files is sharing.

The latter is quite good because it's always coherent once you understand you need to select element(s) in the list.

I like the current behavior. I only have a problem with the natural finding for the option. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to enhance it. I must say that once used to it, it satisfies me. But what about new users and less tech competent ones ?

If the problem is screen estate, why not have the file actions in a dropdown / popover

ie, in the file list we have only one (action) button, when clicked we get a dropdown/popover with items for delete / add tag / download / display / share / rename / (future open with...). We can then display this same-menu on right-click & long press.

We still have two clicks, they are just much closer.

I think a simple addition to improve the UX for deletion would be to have a checkbox next to each file, à la OwnCloud. This is a good UI to show the users they can select the file. Right now, clicking on a file can either select it or open it, depending on where you click on it, and it took me some time to find how to select it and how to delete it.
