JuliaCon Local 2025

@gdalle To match the branding change for "JuliaconGlobal") (https://github.com/cormullion/graphics/issues/37), we could do:

PNG

SVG

in https://github.com/cormullion/graphics/tree/master/juliacon2025local

I'll add some more graphics soon...

Looks cool! So there is already an equivalent with JuliaCon GLOBAL waiting to be deployed? How would you specify the city on the logo? Also in black?

gdalle avatar Feb 25 '25 18:02 gdalle

How would you specify the city on the logo?

yeah, was looking for a suitable font for the lockup - Helvetica isn't French enough ;)

"Train One":

"BioRhyme"

The first one is nice! How would it look with the year?

gdalle avatar Feb 25 '25 20:02 gdalle

couple of ideas

Image

cormullion avatar Feb 25 '25 21:02 cormullion

First one is cool, but perhaps the italics on the numbers give off a more kitsch vibe than we want to go for? What do you think?

gdalle avatar Feb 25 '25 21:02 gdalle

probably - although I usually think France is good for italics, at least more so than Germany ...

anyway :)

cormullion avatar Feb 25 '25 22:02 cormullion

You're right, the version in italics has more... je-ne-sais-quoi. Could you make light and dark SVG versions so that I integrate it to the website PR I got going?

gdalle avatar Feb 26 '25 05:02 gdalle

uploaded as juliacon2025local/juliacon-local-paris-2025-light.svg and juliacon2025local/juliacon-local-paris-2025-dark.svg - see if they're any use...

cormullion avatar Feb 26 '25 12:02 cormullion

Thanks! I think the logo for dark background looks weird? Maybe you didn't invert all the colors?

gdalle avatar Feb 26 '25 17:02 gdalle

I made some more edits...

cormullion avatar Feb 26 '25 17:02 cormullion

Thanks, I ported your logo to https://github.com/JuliaCon/www.juliacon.org/pull/629!

gdalle avatar Mar 03 '25 13:03 gdalle

Cool, thanks. I’ll start on the next graphic items soon 😀

cormullion avatar Mar 03 '25 14:03 cormullion

Hi @cormullion, hope you're doing well! Just following up on the JuliaCon Graphics, as we might want to start designing goodies and badges soon. Do you think you might be able to come up with a skyline design, like the one for previous JuliaCons with world monuments, but only featuring Paris landmarks? Do you have other ideas for visual identity of the conference?

gdalle avatar Jun 06 '25 07:06 gdalle

Avik used to know where to get those skyline images . 🤔 I’ll have a think this week too.

cormullion avatar Jun 06 '25 08:06 cormullion

@aviks care to share your secrets?

gdalle avatar Jun 06 '25 08:06 gdalle

Not much of a secret, I purchased them off a stock photo site.

aviks avatar Jun 06 '25 08:06 aviks

So much for the mystery ^^ I'll take a look at the link you sent on Slack, thanks.

I'm also wondering whether we can merge an iconic Paris visual with some Julia styling, or at least something software-specific. Putting the three dots on the Eiffel tower seems like an obvious but ugly choice (also we already have these dots in the JuliaCon logo itself). I was kind of counting on @cormullion's keener eye for design ;)

gdalle avatar Jun 06 '25 08:06 gdalle

The weekend beckons 😀

cormullion avatar Jun 06 '25 08:06 cormullion

A few rough sketches to stimulate the discussion...

If you play with the radii of the Julia logo, you can almost get the Eiffel tower (possibly a bit too subtle?):

Image

Here'a another idea also hinting at Mr Eiffel's work:

Image

Julia dots using local boy (?) Poisson's disk distribution:

Image

Quite nice as a heatmap:

Image

Julia dots in the mist:

Image

Not sure what's happening here - some kind of 3D projection:

Image

If not the tower, then how about that pyramid:

Image

If you can get the Paris skyline stock image I might be able to make a version of this (if I can remember how):

Hi @cormullion, thank you so much for your work, these are amazing! We're still brainstorming with the colleagues from the committee to pick the best direction, but we'll get back to you soon 🙏

gdalle avatar Jun 20 '25 05:06 gdalle

One way to hint at the tower without showing it... 😀

Image

cormullion avatar Sep 04 '25 18:09 cormullion

I love it!!!

Hi! Would you happen to have a vectorized version of this one?

Alseidon avatar Sep 12 '25 13:09 Alseidon

For context, we'd like to put it on the tote bag. Although perhaps we could put the full Eiffel tower there while we're at it, since it's gonna be a vertical kind of design? The half tower is great for a truncated, horizontal feel

gdalle avatar Sep 12 '25 14:09 gdalle

Sure, no problem, I can output as SVG. I've removed the black background.

paris-eiffel-poster.svg.zip

Now here's Mr Eiffel in full:

Image

One advantage of the horizontal version over this is that the lines might be larger/thicker; not sure what the resolution of the printing is like...

For a design without the architectural detail, you could try something like this:

Image

cormullion avatar Sep 12 '25 17:09 cormullion

@cormullion we're putting it on the tote bags!

gdalle avatar Sep 17 '25 07:09 gdalle

With a slight change (sorry, I know my graphic designer friends would kill me if I changed a logo without their approval...), the "juliacon local" text in white wasn't visible enough on the wool, so I changed it to black!

Alseidon avatar Sep 17 '25 08:09 Alseidon

Cool! I hadn’t considered pale backgrounds 😀 No shirts this year?

cormullion avatar Sep 17 '25 08:09 cormullion

Nope, we went cheap (but presenting it as eco-friendly)

gdalle avatar Sep 17 '25 10:09 gdalle

Hi @cormullion,

Do you think you might be able to provide a YouTube background for the Paris video recordings? I wanted to use this one but it has the old logo and sponsors on it. Having just the naked background would be great, but given more time you can also go crazy and include

If you're too busy, no problem at all, just let me know! And if you want to be paid for your (sofar voluntary) work we can definitely discuss that!

Side note: I'm not sure how intellectual property would work for the background (and the conference logo), because our video provider contract states "Unless otherwise agreed in writing, Provider retains ownership of raw footage, project files, and working materials". I probably need to work in an exception for the images we provide.
