Implement rename CII->OpenSSF in logo
Implement rename CII->OpenSSF in the logo. We'll need a graphics artist. LF has a graphics group, they might be able to help.
We'll need to decide what it should look like. Options include:
- Existing logo (trophy), just change CII text the OpenSSF.
- OpenSSF goose holding a trophy
- Others?
+1 to the goose holding a trophy or medal :)
For comparison, here's our current logo, as (1) favicon and (2) full size:

I've created an LF-internal issue for the graphics team: https://jira.linuxfoundation.org/browse/LC-872.
LF graphics created these 2 tries - comments would be very welcome!!
I'm partial to the goose :)

The goose is fun, but there are lots of other OpenSSF projects & that might be confusing.
The trophy is the easy choice (it's what we do already), but granted it's a little boring. It does create a clear icon though.
Other comments?
Maybe we can combine them? Keep the trophy (at its current size or slightly smaller), and add the goose behind or to the side holding the trophy (like the goose is showing off its trophy). The big trophy is understandable even when minimized to a tiny size & is specific to this project; the goose shows it's part of the larger OpenSSF effort & is anthropomorphic (which I find helpful in logos/mascots).
+1
I find the trophy too generic, so combining is better

Yeah, both the trophy & goose in isolation are too generic - the combination suddenly makes it specific.
+1 to a combo
Very good, I sent that comment back to the LF design folks. Let's see what they come up with.
We have 3 more candidates within "version 2"! Left-to-right let's call them option A (top left, goose inside text), option B (top right, goose head inbetween text), and option C (centered second row, white shield). OSSF_Badge-v2.pdf
I prefer option B. The trophy & goose are larger in option B than the other options (so they're easier to see), and I think the white shield of option C looks a little ugly. Option B's "Best Practices" text isn't centered at the bottom & the text is smaller - some may not like that, but it does makes its placement clearly intentional & eye-catching.
+1 for B
I will admit option C is pretty good and is close to B for me. The white shield does connect to the Goose shield in other logos, & provides a clearer contrast for the trophy, so maybe it's not so bad. I do like the stars instead of the "<" and ">" symbols, the stars are more clearly related to earning a trophy.
I'm for C, I think it'll scale down more gracefully, and the boundary between the trophy and goose for me is less crisp on A and B due to the color choices
I agree that the cup does "pop" out more on C. Can we put a shield behind the larger goose & cup on B?
Just posting the svgs for reference!
I wanted to play around with inkscape a bit, so this is a very quick mockup of adding a shield behind the middle one. (The cup is just slightly off center and the shield / cup proportions are slightly off.)
My vote, is with the original C. I am personally not a fan of the asymmetry of B, The fact that the head of the goose breaks up Open Source Security Foundation, reminds me of the old Don't Dead, Open Inside meme. What about a rendering with a slightly larger shield on C?
A few random thoughts.
Option C isn't symmetric either - the star is only on one side. If we did option C, I'd want full symmetry with a star on each side. Basically, be symmetric or intentionally asymmetric, don't be almost symmetric.
@TonyLHansen 's draft has a lot to like about it, but I would get rid of the unmatched "<" (do both or neither).
I would like the trophy obvious. A larger shield with the trophy on it would make the trophy more obvious, and having the shield does connect it better to the logo.
One problem with the shield is that there's little contrast between the white shield & the gold trophy. Maybe if the shield was a different (darker) color the trophy would stand out better. What would be a better color for the shield that would make the trophy stand out better?
I don't think option B has the risk of misreading like Don't Dead, Open Inside.
π I am not saying it will be misread, I think it visually reminds me of the meme. The missing star asymmetry can be easily fixed (and after you mentioned it I think it would be good to do so). I think the asymmetry of the goose's head in OSSF is more jarring and visually unappealing. Just my opinion though. I can certainly agree on the contrast issue although a 1 pixel stroke on the trophy could also fix the contrast issue.
1-pixel strokes only work well when the image is large & your eyesight is perfect. Contrasting colors are better, I think, because they work even when the image is shrunk to a small size and/or for people with reduced vision.
I can understand disliking the asymmetry. I think sticking the goose's head into the frame is fine, but others may think it's terrible.
Vote : Option C the shield with the chalice π
My preference goes to the option C.
I vote for C :)
Vote: Option C - the goose with the smaller shield w/chalice.
