Plugging in a controller causes the game to freeze

I'm on Pop!_OS 22.04. Game works perfectly, until i plug in my gamecube controller adapter set to PC mode. If I open the game with it connected, i get laggy audio and no video. As soon as I unplug it, the game starts working normally. As soon as i plug it back in, the video freezes and audio becomes laggy again.
