UI & UX improvements: 2-level content elements & modules. Easier access to the 2. level from 1. level
Hello,
I've experienced many times that some users/customers have problem with the logic of the 2-level content elements/modules like articles, news, events.
When they start editing the first level they don't see the second level for the detail site. They are unsure for this reason and they don't know what they should do as next to reach the second level because this is not visible. In their eyes it means - what I cannot see I cannot edit/find it. The hidden button with the function for editing the next level under the arrow of the right button supports this doubts too.
I think it should be more easier to reach the second level to edit the content of the detail page.
I've been thinking about a new way and here is the first suggestion.
- Tabs for 1. (settings, teaser etc.) and 2. level (detail page)
- The content of the active tabs can be loaded first after clicking it.
- The button for the editing of the 2. level should be visible as next possibility to switch to the 2. level.
- More clear/corresponding icons in the overview for both levels
👍 But I would simply name it "Edit content".
I don't think we should change this right now for three reasons:
- We are planning on reworking the UX in Contao 5, so it is likely that this change will be changed again.
- As soon as we change the UX, every piece of documentation (books, videos etc.) is wrong and has to be updated. Most likely twice (see above).
- Existing users, who are already used to the UX, will get confused. Again, most likely twice.
I think it can happen earlier then with Contao 5. I think that many users are more confused by the current solution. I can understand that all the forms of the documentation should be changed, but on the other hand I wouldn't depend big things, that are necessary to win more users and make Contao more user-friendly, on it.
As discussed in Mumble on July 5th, this concept implies a lot more cases than shown in the screenshot. For instance, there are more than two levels that need to be considered (pages -> articles -> content elements). And third-party bundles have to be able to add links, too. And there are a lot of edge cases that need to be solved (e.g. that you cannot switch to level 2 before you have saved level 1).
So before we implement this, we need to develop a concept.
