Community Versions Documentation and Implementation

Open Fobhep opened this issue 4 years ago • 6 comments

I am aware there have been a number of Community version related issues eg #85 and #219 but I was wondering how you would feel about a PR adding some more documentation and maybe configuration to this stack.

As a user I would love to have it documented specifically that I can utilize community-only things by setting certain parameters. Also exclude certain packages from the install stack. And I would love to be able to switch of the metrics-reporter from the inventory.

If you guys would be willing to get something like that merged I would draft a PR :)

@Fobhep Thanks for reaching out, and I think this is a really great point.

Let me take this back to the team to discuss, to see if we can understand the pros/cons best way to approach this.

Personally, I am always in favour of more documentation, and even better when I don't have to write it. :)

happy to get your feedback then :)

let me maybe add one point - from my point as a consultant this would be very useful for "virgin kafka" clients who want to do a PoC using purely FOSS versions. Switching from there to a licensed deployment would then be even smoother.

And as I mentioned earlier this would also be a great thing for pure Apache Kafka users :)

@JumaX Are Confluent docs a monorepo?

I recently stumbled on this Azure video which might be useful for y'all's docs team

@Fobhep We would be happy to review the PR you submit regarding more open source documentation. My suggestion would be for there to be an MD file that we can link to the readme. I think it makes sense to keep the OpenSource docs in the repo itself.

@OneCricketeer Our official docs are handled by another team, and they are currently going through a redesign, so the short answer is not really, but it could change. :)

Dear all,

So what's about this PR ? Is there a chance to get it merged ?

Best, Jerome

@jrevillard We are waiting on @Fobhep to finish his work before we can merge this. If you are able to contribute, it would be greatly appreciated.
