"Solving Environment" takes forever, as always, and it remains without result.

What happened?
Because of the constraints in my workplace, I have to work with (Ana)Conda. After installing everything as required, I wanted to install Mamba via:
conda install mamba -n base -c conda-forge
But even this small task poses an insurmountable problem for Conda. Since 3 hours I see the same picture

Unfortunately, I can't switch to Pip with Mamba (to avoid conda), which I usually always do. Can I bypass the "solving environment" thing?

just want to report that I encounter the same issue: conda install mamba -n base -c conda-forge loads forever
Waiting can be frustrating. The main issue is due to the base environment having many packages. This is very often the cause of long solves as the problem space grows incredibly challenging and why we strongly encourage people to create environments instead of installing normal packages into the base env.
@ibaris Having said that, it's not acceptable to be passive-aggressive in these issue requests. All this tone does is ensure that the small number of core maintainers (who support millions of users) focus more on other individuals with a more respectful tone.
I am very sorry for my tone. I was just very frustrated because I lost again almost a whole day to get something done with Anaconda. The problem also occurred when I installed a completely new version of Anaconda. Now I also understand that conda and Anaconda are separate things. I know this is not your fault. That was very unprofessional of me to write this issue in this tone. Maybe I should have waited a little.

Mamba should be able to be installed without issues on a clean base environment, but if you want to you can actually use the same solver mamba uses in conda. It's currently experimental but we will be removing that label soon.

Same problem solving environment for conda update conda 14 hour + and still running solving environment.
We have 20 + legacy environments we don't want to lose or which would be a pain to recreate.
We were adding a new environment when picked up the warning about conda version being quite out of date, see below.
Updating conda in (base) has tied up the server for 14 hours so far, running a single core at 100%, and may yet end with a fail to solve?
We are wary of breaking existing environments if rebuilding, but are trying to understand what options we have if "conda update -n base -c defaults conda" does not work

Hi @360CAS! In order to easily update conda in the future, we recommend having your base environment empty of all dependencies except those related to conda. If removing these extra dependencies is an option for you, we suggest running the following from your base environment:
conda install --rev 0 # this will revert your environment to its default state, removing all dependencies installed there
conda update conda # This will install the latest conda
You can read more about revisions in conda here. If removing these dependencies is not an option, we suggest updating conda with the following command:
conda install conda=22.9.0
This may still take some time to complete but should be quicker than conda update conda.
Also, like @ibaris recommended, we highly suggest trying out the libmamba solver for conda.
Mambo rocks! After repeatedly waiting several hours 'Solving Environment' and giving up to try something else, followed @LtDan33 advice and Mamba solved it in under 20 minutes! Thanks for the great work conda team!

OMG, so thankful for this thread. After 9 HOURS of waiting on conda (what sort of dependency-resolution could possibly require all that computation?), switching to Libmamba fixed everything in 10 seconds.
anyone have more detailed instructions for a non-conda/Mamba expert to switch to libmamba? currently stuck at solving environment also...
Nevermind, found it in the link... had to do some out of the box thinking which was apparently not possible when I first posted this.
On Fedora 37
sudo conda create -n base
sudo conda update -n base conda
sudo conda install -n base conda-libmamba-solver
conda config --set solver libmamba
Probably won't need sudo if your base isn't in /usr like mine was...
After doing the above, solving environment took about 10 seconds. Package download a bit longer, but at least I can see it doing something instead of hanging and seeing if it will fail like other users reported.

I am able to repeat @sandwormusmc 's steps above without sudo. The
conda install -n base conda-libmamba-solver
step still took several hours, but it does show progresses, and eventually completed the installation.

I would highly recommend to try libmamba. Do you try it @Tunechileee? But be aware: The current problem is, that the new version of Anaconda version is not working libmamba (see here).
I'd also like to point out that some of my messing with this messed up DNF on my Fedora 37 system when I reverted conda base to rev 0. At some point all of the Python dependencies for Python were broken, and I thought I had hosed my system completely. Took me weeks to figure something out, which resulted in installing a bunch of RPMs forcibly, then to be able to use DNF again, I have to sudo to root first, set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/lib64, then run DNF. Bit of a pain because I can't "sudo dnf update" anymore.

I get a lot of emails from people who have the same problem and haven't found a solution yet. Here is the solution that solved my problem:
- Updating conda and conda-build
conda update conda
conda update conda-build
- Installing libmamba To install and set the new solver, run the following commands:

After these steps the solving environment issue should be gone.

Exactly. After libmamba is installed, you can create your environments like:
conda env create -f your_env_yaml.yml
or
conda install xyz
