Requesting renaming of images

Open OpenGreenStreet opened this issue 3 years ago • 5 comments

What is the user problem or growth opportunity you want to see solved?

From my point of view it would be good if users of the app could request renaming of images.

How do you know that this problem exists today? Why is this important?

About the web frontend

Who will benefit from it?

I can request a renaming directly in the app and do not have to do it on the PC

Anything else you would like to add?

Thanks for the idea!

Changing the title of an image should be a rare operation, it is risky as it breaks wikilinks. I would recommend always first checking where the image is in use, which can only be done on the website.

Since readers are mostly shown captions, I think typos can be left in titles.

There might also be backclash from the Wikimedia community if this feature is used without care (especially if editing other peoples' images).

Summary: With our low developers count, I think it is hard to justify the maintenance cost of this.

Thank you for your feedback. I had only thought of a request. The implementation would then be done by an experienced user or admin. It would be enough to simply call the dialog for requesting a renaming via a web browser.

It was just an idea, if it doesn't make sense to you, it's okay.

I had missed that indeed, thanks.

Is there an existing place on Commons for such requests?

I can't say. I have asked an admin.
