Nearby listings from Wikivoyage
Most Wikivoyage listings have no Wikidata item (because they are about not-so-notable things such as a small castle or local museum).
But many have latitude/longitude, and all accept an image= parameter which is often empty. This image is used in dynamic maps.
Having pictures for these would improve Wikivoyage, which is a WMF project.
Example: The tunnels at https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Kinmen#See
A database of Wikivoyage listings is available at https://github.com/baturin/wikivoyage-listings
A live API is available at http://wvpoi.batalex.ru/api/
Example request: http://wvpoi.batalex.ru/api/get-listings/?language=en&positional_data=true&limit=200&format=geojson&min_latitude=41.97480631113838&max_latitude=42.582410848693954&min_longitude=-71.62948608398438&max_longitude=-70.06668090820312 (note: the image parameter does not seem to be available currently, see https://github.com/baturin/wikivoyage-listings/issues/57)
Warnings:
- The API is not live, so points will not disappear until 2 weeks (at most) later
- Adding the uploaded images to Wikivoyage involves editing the wikicode. This could be done by a bot, with the Commons app only sending data to that bot.
- Some listings exist in different language versions of Wikivoyage. An easy could be to only use the English Wikivoyage at first.
- I have proposed moving listings to Wikidata (which would make this issue pointless), but I don't see this happening within 10 years, so I believe this issue is worth implementing.
Hi @nicolas-raoul :) what I'm getting by reading this, that we can use wikivoyage for nearby listing (I mean for places)? Am I right?
Yes! Keep in mind that compared to other issues, this one is both difficult and low-priority.
Is this something that could still be considered, considering Nicolas last comment, ie, 'difficult and low priority'?
Chris.
