[BUG] Please add Lower Sorbian (dsb) to the language list of the user profile

Open milupo opened this issue 1 year ago • 3 comments

In the list of languages of a user profile, Lower Sorbian is missing, it cannot be selected by a user. Please add it.

I know there was few activity for Lower Sorbian until now but Sorbians intend to build a dataset for Lower Sorbian as well.

Thank you.

Regards

@milupo,

Thank you very much for your inquiry.

We have recently launched our variant feature, which allows contributors to select their preferred language variant for contributions.

As you mentioned, Lower Sorbian is not available in a users profile. We implement variants based on community requests and we are in the process of collecting and mapping these variants. Please use this form to enter the variants you would like to be included on Common Voice. These options will be made available for the community to choose from.

If you have any further questions or need clarification on anything, please feel free to let me know.

Hi jgrant29,

thank you for your reply.

Lower Sorbian is a separate language, not a variant, it has an own language code, dsb. There are not "sorb-upper" or "sorb-lower" as language codes. Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian are parent languages, yes, and many many years ago they were considered as different Sorbian dialects by some linguists. But this view is obsolete now. To the contrary, Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian have their own dialects.

Lower Sorbian dsb has now been added as a Language to Common Voice

Many thanks for requesting this language, and for all of your efforts in localisation and sentence collection - and very best wishes for building data in Lower Sorbian 🚀

Thank you very much, Kathy.

Hi Kathy. I think we were at cross purposes. I meant the language list in the user profile. A user cannot select Lower Sorbian because it is not in the list (neither as Dolnoserbšćina nor as dsb).

@milupo, I think it displays only languages that are fully enabled. And it may take a day or two until it is displayed there.

Not a good UX, but as the "language-starter" you should go to WRITE page of your language and enter the required sentences and let people vote. After you reach 750+ (I think) it will be enabled in user profiles after a day or two.

There are two inconveniences there, which might be fixed:

  • The list is not adequately sorted, people are forced to search a bit
  • ISO codes cannot be used to locate the language

All these have been quite a problem when I was starting with Circassian languages.
