add an option to customize scopes

Could you add an option to support a set of predefined scopes?

I'm not sure how to get someone to review the pull request (maybe we can update the README with guidance), but I did see that @dmwelch was the last person to merge pull requests successfully. Maybe we can convince him to review this one for us!
