How to use novram

My GPU vram is only 8G, so I want to use the --novram option to run the more than 12G sdxl model, but I found that vram will still be used after novram is turned on, and vram out of memory will still appear.

Is it not? Because I have the same issue on a GTX 1070. I get OOM errors now and then in the middle of a workflow (very disruptive) no matter which flag I use, so I'm not sure what they do, exactly, or how to avoid those errors.
