LaserCutter - Replace Controller Board
Currently, the PC attached to our LaserCutter is running Windows 10. Unfortunately, Windows 10 will reach end of support by October 2025.
The PC can not be upgraded to Windows 11, since the Processor is not compatible.
We have multiple options to deal with this:
- Throw money at microsoft to get updates after End of Support
-
- This is a big "no" from my end 😅
- Buy a new PC to then use Windows 11
-
- From AfB, we can get a suitable PC between 300-500€
-
- This would require only little effort on my end
- Buy a new controller board to enable us switching to Linux
-
- We anyway thought of replacing the board
-
- This would enable us to switch from LaserCut 5.3 to LightBurn
Internal alignment with @Johannes09 and @LukasFreeze showed that we prefer Option 3.
From the manufacturer of our Laser, we got the information that the RDC6442S is compatible with our Laser. It would also be compatible to LightBurn and enable us to purchase a rotary attachment in the future.
What I don´t know though is if there are better options. For example, the newer rdc6445gt5 provides a touch screen and some more modern interfaces.
Is anybody willing to check, which board would be the best option for us? :)
I took a look at it — the RDC6445GT5 controller should work just as well.
lightburn on linux is more user friendly than lasercut 5.3 on windows. I would also favor getting a new board.
Lightburn droppend Linux support since 1.7 (2024 or so), so still needs to be Windows.
Dang. Back in June, Lightburn 1.7 was still current, which has Linux support With 2.0, Linux support was dropped :/
So I guess I will use the next cheap option to get us a new Windows PC..
As a big fan of open source I would love to see Linux. What about https://visicut.org/ if we have contacts to our manufacturer would that be an option? I don't know the software itself, I just had a look on what is available. Maybe worth a try.
Other laser cutters are just used like a printer, you can then for example print directly from inkscape. Of course you need a printer driver, that might again we need M$, but maybe as well worth a second thought.
Just throwing in some ideas...
