Leaving Cinnabar PokeCenter during MissingNo. crashes game

Play the story up to when it's time to capture MissingNo. and Cinnabar Island becomes a glitch land. Enter the Pokemon Center and either heal your Pokemon or talk to an NPC in the building. Then, leave. Your screen will turn a solid colour (red if you healed, black if you just talked to someone), play a looping sound effect, and never finish loading or allow you to control anything.

This could be intentional and I apologise if so, but it seems unlikely since the failsafe NPC if you have nothing with Surf is in the Pokemon Center, and he will also crash the game if talked to before leaving.

Can't reproduce no matter what I do.

This happened to me.

What I did was smash all buttons and eventually it put me back in the Centre. Then I went out without doing anything and everything continued as normal.
