User preference for date displays

Where we show dates, we show text with an approximate value ("3 hours ago", "yesterday", "2 months ago", etc), and we show the actual timestamp on hover. Some users prefer to see the actual timestamp instead of having to hover to get it. Is it feasible to add a user preference for this? Or do we generate and cache some pages, particularly the post list, making this impractical?
