difference between the two options
It's unclear to me how to get started -- what's the difference between importing via beaker and 'adding project to trackbook'?
it'd be cool if it loaded with an example project maybe, or i could just hit 'open project' and open a directory on my machine to start

Definitely. Thats the hope but limited by Beaker right now.

Its a two step thing, not two options =). Beaker prevents you from doing the direct import at the moment, I can take a look at the upcoming release to see if that changes (I know they are getting rid of the workspace, which makes things complex to start).
What about the “import folder” tool in Beaker?

Ah it wasn't clear to me that it was a 2 step thing. is there no way (like electron) to open a file dialog?
