Remove HD label from 1080p

Open megapro17 opened this issue 1 year ago • 8 comments

PROBLEM: YouTube 1080p looks absolutely terrible, and it doesn't deserve to have HD icon around a quality selector. And the same icon is used for 1440p, which looks decent. For 4k there is another icon. If a video doesn't have good quality, I can close it immediately, but because of the HD icon I have to manually open the quality setting and watch in case there is 1440p.

SOLUTION:
Simply remove it image There is a function aW.prototype.updateBadge in base.js with condition that sets ytp-hd-quality-badge for both 1080 and 1440 that could be simply edited to only match 1440. But I can't figure out how you can edit a private function with extension.

ALTERNATIVES: Make different icon for 1080p

RELEVANCE / SCOPE: every self respecting person because youtube video quality is absolutely terrible at low resolutions

every self respecting person

are you using our quality setting yet? if we watch 1080 in a 720 viewport, for example, wont it be close to uncompressed 720? 💭💭 (HD is the name of 720p. 1080 "fullHD" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxNBiAV4UnM

I was using youtube hd userscript that sets maximum possible quality all times, with flushing buffer

For me, it's still blurry... I don't like the 4000 kpbs for 1080p that YouTube offers. Even on a 1080p 21.5 monitor. The main problem with youtube is not the resolution, it's the bitrate. Bluray 1080p looks incredible

Next to YouTube GUI tweaks, we could/should probably/in some cases, consider: The range & voilatily of Bitrate of a video. And Youtube's content category. And ..?

main problem with youtube is not the resolution, it's the bitrate

No matter how much you dislike the label 1080p is "Full HD".

because of the HD icon I have to manually open the quality setting and watch in case there is 1440p.

You can set player/quality to whatever you want to always override to the highest quality regardless viewport resolution.

The new 1080p video is really worse than before. It's just like 480p upscaling to 1080p videos.

aaand it looks like you might get your wish of higher quality 1080 https://www.androidpolice.com/youtube-1080p-premium-option-wide-testing/

in the mean time Im ~80% sure you can force it manually editing smplayer.ini and adding --ytdl-raw-options-append=extractor-args=youtube:player_client=default,ios at the end of ytdl_quality=".... declaration
