The CurseForge website has ads, though - one popped up at the bottom of the site as soon as I opened it. What makes Modrinth different? 
+1 for this, people have tried and failed to build it manually (myself included) #727
I've given that a try, I'm not a huge fan of the UI either - particularly since touchscreen support is extremely important for my use case

I don't think I properly set up lwjgl, come to think of it. I'll make sure that's working next time I test
