Investigate nouveau VRAM situation

I can't find a quick answer to how much VRAM nouveau is giving xorg, but I suspect it might not be enough - I got Gnome into a state where it seemed to be crashed, but the machine was still alive and journalctl showed gtk errors about having run out of memory.
