offer option to connect without an app

Rather than requiring an application, perhaps there can be a fallback for the plugin to create a little (temporary) dummy app to connect through.

The use case in mind is an application that has been shut down for a while that we want to delete, and we didn't want to have to bring up the application again to export the database.
