Keyboard backlight
Hello,
Could someone tell me if the backlight is working properly on the Aero 15X (or 15W) ? I know that you cannot have the same level of control like in Windows but could not find any more informations on that. Can the backlight at least be turn on / turn off ?
Thank you !
Hey! I used it under both Ubuntu and Arch, and although the overall setup is quite hard, the keyboard backlight (On,Middle,Off) worked out of the box. It seems to be part of the firmware of the keyboard and not OS-related software, so it works no matter how you do it! (even in the BIOS if I remember right)
Nice ! And thanks for your quick answer :) Do you think it's a good overall linux laptop ? I plan to buy this laptop soon. Main use cases are few games, 3D rendering and programming (under Arch I think).
I would say it is doable and it does really have quite the punch when it comes to graphics performance. However I would only advise it to someone who either knows how to fix problems with loading kernel modules, or who is really willing to put the effort into learning how to do it properly. There are some modifications you have to do on your grub (kernel module loading for the graphics card, especially if you wanna keep some battery life with bumblebee) and it can get overwhelming for a beginner. If you are an advanced user, I think it is one of the best machines I have ever owned and would recommend it. Just know you can't really get firmware updates, or keyboard lighting customization without keeping a windows partition, or maybe I just don't know how to do these.
I would echo @Soulthym comments. It is a pretty good laptop. The only persistent issue that bothers me is the touchpad and so I carry around a mouse. I definite think it was worth it to have two SSDs one for windows and one for linux so my windows partition continues to work for firmware updates. -C
I have heard a lot about trackpad issues and I don't know why, but mine is just working perfectly. Maybe because I installed the windows precision driver under windows, and that affected the firmware of it? Anyway, after just a little bit of tweaking here and there with xinput (under Arch), it is the best trackpad I have ever used
And yes, having 2 SSDs in it really makes it that much better, I currently have 1.5Tb shared between the windows partition and the Arch one, I have a lot of redundancy (I a messy user) and still don't even lack space.
Thanks both of you for your inputs :) I think I will purchase one (with 2 SSDs) even if it takes some time to configure properly. Have a nice day !
(btw you can close this "issue" or keep it open so someone can read this thread)
