nemo seems to pull i the whole cinnamon desktop as build requirement.. which makes this rather a bit prohibitive

oh well , just looking for any working one. I don't know how difficult it is to implement in Clear Linux. There are no words to express the poverty that prevails in this Distro (and others based on the same ring of tools) regarding such a fundamental operation as file handling - considering the year we live in. The default built-in Nautilus in terms of capabilities stopped somewhere at the level of Explorer from Win98. You can't do much with it, but you have to admit at least it is stable. On the other hand, there is for example Dolphin - “having” great capabilities, but which is unstable. The nail in the coffin is the lack of Drag and Drop from File-Roller. To be sure of the expected results, I often finish my work in Midnight Commander.

I'm wide open to creative solutions -- but if it pulls in a whole desktop environment that basically conflicts with our basic one -- that's a bit of a bridge too far in terms of maintenance etc.

I understand. It's always good to ask something and even get a “negative” answer than not to ask at all and wonder. Thank you for your answer.
