About the continuation of the project -

Open hanaral opened this issue 3 years ago • 8 comments

@cleac It's a shame you are unable to continue to support it, I do not mind taking the helm - but I probably will need some help since I don't know much programming. I might be able to muster some periodic releases like an LTS, and I'd be glad if you were able to give a hand every so often if you are able to.

Edit: Added tag for visibility

I can serve as an advisor regarding developing for elementary OS.

Not that I know much about Olifant specifically, but I do rely upon it!

I wonder is @jcamposz would be interested, they seem to have made quite a few pulls already. I've already made the changes necessary for the main window to get rounded corners, I'll open a PR later.

Hey, @hanaral!

Thanks for mentioning me in the thread, I really appreciate it. I am deeply sorry for such right step of pausing the project without further notice. I really want the project to strive, but at that moment my priorities shifted a lot so I needed to say “no” to some things, and Olifant was one of them.

I can try resurrecting the project now, but I will not be able to contribute much with code because Vala is really not that language I am deeply interested in and want to invest much time in. I can see only these things I can contribute or help with:

  • Building a CI pipeline to ensure stable builds
  • Managing releases
  • Organizing tasks and issues

And before resurrecting the project, it is better to be sure that:

  • there are developers interested in contributing with code
  • there is clear vision on next steps and whether we are ready to work on them
  • we have clear understanding of who is responsible for what (due to there is more than one person interested)

@cleac I’m not sure if I’d personally be able to keep it alive by myself. Would you be able to resume some basic development on the side? I don’t mind at all trying to help development and improve developer attraction. I’ve already somewhat successfully implemented libhandy rounded window corners + I want to make swiping back from posts possible with gestures Also we have a hugely anticipated release of elementary around the corner which might give it a boost. This project could easily catch new elementary devs who want a social media app on the platform Edit: forgot to tag

Hello @hanaral , I could help you to keep alive this project. I'm interested but my knowledge about GTK development is really poor, This a good oportunity to learn more. I promise to study :-D

I would like to help as well. I am not experienced, but that is because of a focus on college coursework, which has rather oddly taken me away from most, if not all, opportunities for me to learn more about GTK development. I will see if I can learn more and contribute as I would also love to see this project survive (I use it whenever I use Elementary OS).

what is the current roadmap and bugfixing priority list for this project? I have some time off from school, so I should have some time to teach myself what would be needed to contribute.

@stormchaser3000 I'm not sure about a schedule, but probably pushing a bugfixing update ever couple of months. I can try doing aesthetics stuff like styling, icon making and so on. I also don't mind making promotional stuff and setting up a ghpages site for it.
