Canceling suggestions doesn't actually cancel mentions

2. Hit esc
3. Type space, suggestions box will appear again

✔️ Expected result

When the user explicitly cancels suggestions, they should not reappear.

❌ Actual result

Suggestions reappear when the user continues typing.
