[FR] file transcription?

Open mawnir opened this issue 2 months ago • 8 comments

I have some files I need to transcribe, and I’d prefer to keep using only this tool instead of switching to others—unless it’s too much work. Another thing: I can’t use the Fn shortcut on my MacBook. Also, Parakeet v3 sometimes transcribes in languages other than English, so I’d love to be able to lock it to English only.

This may be added in the future

Parakeet doesn't allow you to pick a language as far as I'm aware.

Thank you.. and the Fn shortcut in MacBooks?

Other issues have discussed. It requires some work to fix.

I'm also very interested in this feature. Do we know exactly what needs to be done and how to help?

As a temporary solution, I think it may be possible to use a virtual microphone and play a file through it, although this isn't very user-friendly.

@a-b the best way to help would be to mock out the UI and how you would have it work, I can give feedback on this. transcribe-rs supports transcribing files of the right format and should be straightforward. if files need to be resampled, probably can use rubato which the project already has as a dependency for resampling and maybe hound for reading the files iirc.

Hi @cjpais

For the UI, for a minimal first version, how about adding a menu item? It could show "Transcribe file...", and clicking it would open a system file open dialog.

Then the existing flow could be reused - the existing "Transcribing..." display could be used to show the file was transcribing, and the output pasted to the OS as normal.

@ollieglass @a-b @mawnir could one of you move this into a discussion? I think this would be a good thing to have in the future. Would love to have a PR implement it in a clean way. And if no one is capable of a PR, please mock up and provide screenshots of a UI so someone could go implement it
