Imagery
Site design needs more imagery, let's evaluate a few different options. Who is up for some mock-ups?
Where are you looking for imagery? Images on the static content like card/blog images? Or different headers for each page? Iconography? etc etc. Happy to take a stab at some when I get time if I know what direction you're looking for.
Headers would be good for each page I think, and then we can setup a small crop on the "About" page itself of the image.
Here are a few different ideas for inspiration:
I think I like the third option, but I'm open to your ideas.
I like the first option stylistically, and I think the second would work better on smaller screens. I'm a fan of the third design-wise but with the header being text-on-image I'm hesitant to overuse that look.
So maybe something like the first on larger screens and collapse to the second on smaller screens? Should be somewhat easy with flex.
A card layout would help to solve the minor color vision impairment issue for those with achromatopsia that arose from PR #37 without any need for other changes.
The old site had a pool of header images that we got permission to use from a local photographer. These went on the header on some pages.
Also each post/page had a header banner image, long and thin. Those are missing from the new site but maybe they could be added back in using your final solution.
See everything starting with "banner" here: https://github.com/civicdata/civicdata.github.io/tree/master/images
To clarify, the old imagery is not 'missing'. We still have it, we chose not to use it.
We will not be returning to the old layout. It was getting a bit dated looking.
While the old imagery was very nice, the goal is to update and refresh the site with new images and image treatments.
